The artistic design of the Fallout games would have been very different without the large body of work by the hand of Senior Concept Artist Adam Adamowicz (1968 – 2012). Responsible for most, if not all concept work on Fallout 3, and involved in the early stages of developing Fallout 4, Adamowicz defined the game’s post-apocalyptic aesthetic and the cinematic feel of the game world, dreaming up everything from environments to character models, and from vehicles to buildings. “I like to feel that is’t my job to instigate the [game design] process with a cool drawing that inspires everyone else [at Bethesda] into making something really cool”, he said in an interview.
This certainly is the case in his early concept sketch of the ‘Diamond City’-area, the first settlement the Fallout team worked on for Fallout 4. It’s a study of the style, color palette, and general vibe of the new area, a very loose and humorous sketch doodling with the possibilities of a freshly imagined environment.
Fallout 4 is the fifth installment in the Fallout video game series. The games are characterized by their inventive take on post-apocalyptic science fiction. Developed by Bethesda Game Studios, they pit players against the hazards of a vast nuclear wasteland. The game world is defined by 1950's 'Space Age' aesthetics, generating a strong retro-futuristic feel that sets Fallout apart from other sci-fi games.
Bethesda Softworks is an American video game developer and publisher. Best known for narrative-driven and critically acclaimed titles Dishonored, Fallout, and the Elder Scrolls series (Skyrim), it publishes other major game titles as well, most notably id Software’s Doom and Wolfenstein games.
