This billboard for Red Rocket filling stations is a great symbol of pre-Great War optimism about the future of mobility. According to the Fallout timeline, gasoline and diesel were still in use when the bombs dropped, but – as is clear from the Red Rocket logo – nuclear fusion was propelling cars too. This is very much in line with the naive optimism of the (historical) 1950's about the use of atomic power. Small uranium fission reactors would replace combustion engines over time, it was believed, propelling anything from submarines to spaceships. Cars would follow when reactors were small enough. To support this idea, designers at Ford Motor Company in 1958 proudly showed the 'Ford Nucleon' to the world, a 3/8 scale model of a car driven by nuclear propulsion. Although this model (obviously) never made it into production, it would inspire the designers of the Fallout series in their car designs.
Fallout 4 is the fifth installment in the Fallout video game series. The games are characterized by their inventive take on post-apocalyptic science fiction. Developed by Bethesda Game Studios, they pit players against the hazards of a vast nuclear wasteland. The game world is defined by 1950's 'Space Age' aesthetics, generating a strong retro-futuristic feel that sets Fallout apart from other sci-fi games.
